The origin story of Morris and Sons is very interesting… its a tale of fibre, family and fierce determination to grow with the times… in 50 years, they have changed with the community to take on new products, new services and new challenges. You can read their story here.

The flagship store on York St, Sydney has been home to Morris & Sons since 2008. It’s just a hop, skip and a jump from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and there’s heaps of cafes, restaurants, shops and other places to park your non-fibre friend nearby while you take time to explore this tardis of a shop.
The Melbourne store is also in a plum position: it’s on the first floor of Collins234 near the Bourke St Mall, Degraves St, Block Arcade… but also: there’s a Dymocks bookstore in the basement! Again, it’s quite a big store: you will want to plan to spend a couple of hours pouring over patterns, mixing and matching yarn bases and colours, choosing project bags, getting an extra set of needles… so go alone, or send the non-fibre friend to the bookshop in the basement, ready to recall them to assist with baggage as needed…!

Both stores contain an extensive range of Rowan, Manos de Uruguay and West Yorkshire Spinner yarns, as well as their own range of Morris and Sons yarns on a range of bases. I love that you can get the same colours across all bases: so cool! I also noted their range of Urth yarns sock kits and a select range of Qing Fibre.
I was impressed by Morris and Sons collection of books, magazines and printed patterns… I thought the Melbourne store had a lot… but the shelves and spinners and displays just keep going in Sydney. The wall of needles and notions hugging the counter at Sydney seemed also a bit “extra”… but then, everything in Sydney is! It’s Sydney!
Morris and Sons also stock MUUD and ReDesigned bags… here’s a photo of the lovely display from the Sydney store for you to admire…

What souvenir skeins will I enter in my Yarn Store passport? Some bright orange Rowan Brushed Fleece to knit up a version of my Self-Titled Sweater) and a Morris and Sons bag I intend to embroider with scrap sock yarn… stay tuned!
